Briefly About Myofascial Cupping
Not so long ago we introduced Myofascial Cupping to YK MASSAGES. Naturally, we wanted our clients to look fashionable by displaying blue-ish circles around their shoulders and backs. In all fairness, some of them do look like medal-winning Olympic swimmers every now and then. However, cupping can give a lot more in terms of health and general well-being than a trendy appearance.
Let us take a brief look at what this amazing therapy can do for our bodies.
Myofascial Cupping is a modified version of an ancient Oriental therapy that follows the Musculo-Skeletal system rather than the meridians normally followed by traditional Chinese practitioners. At the same time it uses plastic cups and vacuum suction rather than glass cups and open flame to create vacuum.
Personally I love using cupping in my work. I believe that you can achieve the best results for your clients when you apply various techniques of soft tissue manipulation in one session. For example, massage to create a direct pressure on the muscle while stretching techniques will elongate it creating a sense of relief. The vacuum, however, “draws” the soft tissue out thus creating a tensile force that can be left on one site for a period of time (usually about 5-10min) or moved around. In this way cupping lifts the tissue up and enhances blood circulation to the area, which brings in oxygen, glucose, nutrients and speeds up recovery and repair.
Whatever cupping therapy you may end up choosing, it should be pain free and bruising should be kept to a minimum, if it cannot be avoided (bruising does appear in the areas of dysfunction).
While being a generally safe therapy, Myofascial Cupping should be avoided if you have one or several of the following contraindications:
- History of vascular disease such as DVT or varicose veins
- Pregnant women
- Any bleeding, internal or external
- Open wounds or sensitive/fragile skin
- Young children
- Recent operation
- Heart problem
- Blood thinning medication
For everyone else cupping is a great way to improve their flexibility or get rid of the pain and muscular tension. You can choose cupping as an addition to your regular massage treatment or as a separate therapy.
